| A Bit about Blogs |
| 02.21.04 (2:50 am) [edit] |
I checked into a number of other blog sites and tBLOG proves to be pretty good. I also like UpSaid, Blogdrive, Squarespace, and TypePad. For a fairly complete list of blogs see Weblogs Compendium.
The only things I would like to see on the tBLOG site would be a tutorial, a list of what all the features are about with examples of each, and a list of prices along with storage and bandwidth limits.
Getting started with blogs is interesting. There are a lot of features to examine and then templates to pick, some HTML coding if you want to customize some of the look of your template, and then colors, web backgrounds, and pictures to pick to use with your blog. But the one thing I do like with blogs is that if you don't want to focus on HTML coding and design choices - blog hosting sites and their onsite software make it all too easy to get a site up and running literally within minutes and to update and modify your site just as fast. You can downloaded a chunk of software like at MovableType, which seems to be the mother more or less of blogging, if you want more design and HTML control. And there are sites that have a way to backup all your hard work on making and maintaining your blog. Another great feature available, for instance on Squarespace, is "Domain Redirection" which allows you to have a URL that appears to be an Internic registered URL like "www.yourcompanyname.com" or "www.yoursitename.com" when in fact its running transparently under the Squarespace domain URL.
And lastly, if you wish to be able to use blog software and site hosting for say a business site - you can! Just as you can have frames in a custom built website - you can have that with blog sidebars (essentially your frames) with hyperlinks to the blog entries that carry the data and pictures you want to show your potential clients and customers. And when you wish to update your 'website', that is your blog business site, then you simply update the blog enteries and graphics. Not all blog hosting sites carry space for pictures, but not to worry as there are free hosting sites for files that you can use to reference as URLs where your blog can get those pictures to include in the sections of your blog where you want them to appear. Be sure to check for commercial licenses if the blog site has them and email the blog support team to inquire if their server can handle what you expect for traffic to your site.
